A Listening Heart

Today's reading

1 Kings 1-3, 1 Chronicles 1

1 Kings 3:9

When God invited Solomon to ask for anything, he could have requested wealth, military strength, or a long life. Instead, he asked for wisdom. More specifically, he asked for an understanding heart, literally a heart that listens. Solomon understood that before a leader can speak wisely, he must first learn to hear from God. We often spend our prayers asking God to change our circumstances, remove our burdens, or open new doors. While there is nothing wrong with those requests, perhaps our greatest need is the same as Solomon's: "Lord, give me a listening heart." A heart that hears His voice through His Word will make better decisions than one driven by emotion, fear, or ambition. God was pleased with Solomon's request because it revealed a desire to honor Him above self. The same principle remains true today. When we seek God's wisdom before our own success, He faithfully directs our steps. Before asking God to bless your plans today, ask Him to shape your heart. A listening heart is still one of the greatest gifts a believer can possess.
